Polyaspartic versus epoxy is probably the most common product question we hear. Both terms get thrown around constantly in contractor marketing, and it’s genuinely hard to know what the difference means for your floor. Let us clear it up — without the sales pitch for either one.

What Is Epoxy?

Epoxy is a two-part coating system — a resin and a hardener that, when mixed, create a durable, hard surface that bonds to concrete. It’s been the standard for garage and concrete coatings for decades. Bonds well, looks good, and performs reliably when installed correctly on properly prepped concrete.

The trade-offs with straight epoxy: it can yellow over time with UV exposure — especially in spaces with natural light or on outdoor surfaces. It takes longer to cure, which can mean a longer wait before you can use the space again. In hotter weather, the working time is shorter and the installation becomes more demanding. For an interior garage with minimal sun exposure, those issues matter less. For a patio or pool deck in an Alabama summer? They matter a lot.

What Is Polyaspartic?

Polyaspartic is a newer coating chemistry — technically a type of polyurea — that addresses some of epoxy’s weaknesses. Long-term UV stability: If you don’t want to think about the coating yellowing five years from now, polyaspartic topcoats are the right call. Garage floors in sunnier climates: For Alabama and Tennessee garages that get afternoon sun through the door or windows, polyaspartic holds color better over time.

The Real Answer: It’s Usually Both
